The Huntsman Cancer Foundation
In December 2012, Sigma Chi designated the Huntsman Cancer Foundation as its sole preferred philanthropic partner.
Founded by Significant Sig and Order of Constantine Sig Jon Huntsman Sr, (PENNSYLVANIA 1959), the Huntsman Cancer Institute is dedicated to finding the causes of cancer, developing new and better treatments, and preventing people from ever developing cancer. Huntsman founded HCI to focus on understanding cancer from its very beginnings and to translate this knowledge into safer and more effective treaments. HCI was chosen as Sigma Chi’s preferred philanthropy because many Sigs and their families have been directly affected by cancer, the second-leading cause of death in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society, men have an approximate lifetime risk of 1:2 for developing the disease; for women, the risk is 1:3.
In June of 2015, Sigma Chi made a $10 Million commitment to Huntsman over the next 7 years. In honor of this pledge that Sigma Chi took to help end cancer, the sixth floor of the hospital is named “The Sigma Chi International Fraternity Sixth Floor” which features gourmet cafeteria, multipurpose room for wellness and religious services, a cancer learning center, as well as a sky bridge connecting the research facility to the hospital.
The Huntsman Cancer Institute is the only Cancer Hospital in the world that was built by a cancer survivor, with Jon Huntsman being a 4 time cancer survivor.
In the 2016-2017 year alone, Sigma Chi Chapters across the country have raised over $1.5 Million.
